I particularly liked the moments while Grace was interacting with the other characters when her sass and bright sense of humor shined through.

It was obvious how much the torture she was put through by her father and at the asylum affected her sense of self and her personality. Being inside her head was one hell of a ride. Grace is such a complex, interesting characters. I loved the banter between Grace and Thornhollow.

It really showed me how inhumane the conditions were for mentally insane people back then as well as what used to define mentally insane. This asylum setting sure was creepy! I loved seeing the stark differences between the asylum from the beginning and the asylum in the end.

Some of my many odd fascinations include asylums, prisons, mental hospitals, etc, etc. A Madness So Discreet was definitely one of those books. The setting! A good historical novel can really transport you into that time period and location. My wonderful friend Cat Kit’s Books was kind enough to give me this ARC. Hi friends! Today I am reviewing A MADNESS SO DISCREET by Mindy McGinnis. In this beautifully twisted historical thriller, Mindy McGinnis, acclaimed author of Not a Drop to Drink and In a Handful of Dust, explores the fine line between sanity and insanity, good and evil-and the madness that exists in all of us. Grace, continuing to operate under the cloak of madness, must hunt a murderer while she confronts the demons in her own past.

But gruesome nights bring Grace and the doctor into the circle of a killer who stalks young women. Escaping from Boston to the safety of an ethical Ohio asylum, Grace finds friendship and hope, hints of a life she should have had. With her keen eyes and sharp memory, Grace will make the perfect assistant at crime scenes. When her voice returns in a burst of violence, Grace is banished to the dark cellars, where her mind is discovered by a visiting doctor who dabbles in the new study of criminal psychology. Those secrets, along with the bulge in her belly, land her in a Boston insane asylum. She keeps it locked away, along with her voice, trapped deep inside a brilliant mind that cannot forget horrific family secrets. Published by Katherine Tegen Books on October 6th 2015
